When breaking at size, this extraordinary Tahitian wave stirs the deepest fears of those who risk their lives to challenge her. Even watching from the safety of your computer screen raises the heart rate! Drawing onto the razor sharp reef from really deep water, ocean swells that have travelled thousands of miles, breathe their last in a spectacular exhale of pure energy. I’ve never surfed this wave and probably never will, but it’s image is ingrained on my mind. In creating this carving I tried to capture her energy in the split second before she explodes onto the reef, just as the shallow water in front of the wave draws off the reef to begin its circular journey. It has done so for millions of years before surfers arrived.
